Our impact report contains stories about how VoiceAbility has made, and continues to make, a positive impact on the lives of vulnerable people across England.

impact report 2010-2011 front coverOver the past year, social care and health have probably been more hotly debated than at any time since the founding of the NHS. The NHS and Social Care Bill, the apalling abuse of people with learning disabilities at Winterbourne View Hospital, the effect of the cuts on people who are hardest hit and the closure of Southern Cross, have been amongst many key issues. Not surprisingly stories of people using services dramatically improving their lives rarely feature in the media, but as this report shows, given the right support this can be and is achieved. At the heart of all of all of these issues are the lives of people who need social care and health services.

Our concern is and has always been especially for people who face disadvantage and discrimination and are most in need. We enable people to have a voice, to maintain or take control over their lives and to have rights that are respected. So it is no surprise that our services have been in high demand. Yet VoiceAbility doesn’t simply provide quality services in response to demand. We support people to find their own solutions, increase their independence, safeguard their rights and lead a life of their choice.

We are very pleased that VoiceAbility has risen to this demand, increasing greatly the benefit that our services provide, so that we worked with 16,465 people, roughly 60% more than in the previous year. At the same time we have strengthened our person-centred approach, which was highly commended by Action For Advocacy when awarding us the Quality Performance Mark for advocacy organisations. Both achievements are perhaps yet more remarkable given that we used roughly the same level of resources as the previous year.

This change was made possible by better working methods, systems and structures adopted since the formation of VoiceAbility by the merger of Advocacy Partners and Speaking Up. More than this however it depended on the hard work, skills and commitment of our dedicated team of staff and volunteers. We would like to take this opportunity to thank these colleagues, together with the Charity’s Trustees, our partner agencies, commissioners and funders for their vital support.
