Advocacy in the London Borough of Croydon

VoiceAbility Croydon Logo

Within the London Borough of Croydon, we provide advocacy services across the community.

Croydon Professional Advocacy for people with Learning disabilities

We provide support on specific issues to people with learning disabilities who live in the community. We help them to understand and exercise their rights. The advocates work in partnership with people to access the information and support they need to speak up for themselves, or speak on their behalf in a variety of issues.

Some of the issues our advocates provide support with include:

  • Access to social care service
  • Access to healthcare
  • Coping with big changes
  • Access to housing
  • Access to legal services

Croydon Health Advocacy

This project is aimed to deliver health advocacy for people with learning disabilities, particularly around access to primary care and good hospital services. The health advocate provides support to people who may experience issues with:

  • Accessing health services
  • Having an enhanced GP health check
  • Making routine GP appointments
  • Having a health action plan
  • Having health needs assessed following a hospital discharge
  • Obtaining a diagnosis; or
  • Problems with a health professional who doesn’t have sufficient knowledge of learning disabilities or best interest decision making

The health advocate works with people on a One2One basis and also runs a self advocacy group where issues around health services are shared as well as information provided to increase peoples understanding of healthy living. The group is planning to develop and deliver a presentation of its work to the Croydon GP forum.
