We are pleased to announce that the Medway service has been renewed and will continue on until April 2013.
VoiceAbility offers One2One issue based advocacy to people who are funded by Medway. We accept referrals but individuals must be known to the Local Authority.
The service supports adults to have a voice in creating positive changes in their life.
It is important that people with a learning disability have support available to make sure they are treated fairly and to make it easier for them to participate fully in the community.
VoiceAbility is working with Medway Council to provide an advocacy service for people with a learning disability who are over 18 years of age. You can see our latest report on our Medway services here.
VoiceAbility works with people whatever their sex, race, colour, language, religion or background. Advocacy can help people ensure that their rights are respected, voices are heard and real control is exercised over life decisions.
Joe’s StoryJoe started working with us because he had told people that he wanted to move but they thought that he wasn’t able to make decisions about where he lived. When we first met with Joe, we put together a plan, based on his goals: ‘To understand independent living lifestyles / opportunities and to make choices if he wants to pursue any of these’ Joe’s family wanted him to stay at home, so the VoiceAbility advocate supported Joe to find out more about his options. They worked with him to understand tenancy agreements and what this would mean to him if he moved. The advocate did the research with him and worked out what he needed to understand in order to make a decision for himself. Joe decided that he wanted to have a review meeting to tell everyone what he wanted. At the meeting he told people that he had decided that he wanted to attend an activity during the day at least twice a week. He also told them that he had decided that he did want to move out of his parent’s house. Joe’s Care Manager is now supporting this to happen. VoiceAbility will be there to support Joe if he wants support to decide where to live. |
More information about Advocacy can be found in our leaflets, you can read our easyread leaflet if you would prefer.
“I would like to thank you for the positive influence the work you did had on Joe and his family” Care Manager
