Community Mental Health Advocacy in Barnsley

VoiceAbility South Yorkshire LogoOur advocacy service in Barnsley provides people with ongoing mental health illnesses someone to talk to about transitions in their lives.

There has always been a revolving door situation with people experiencing mental health illnesses and we are working to provide a solution to this. We offer a service to provide advocacy support not only when a client is in hospital, but also when they leave.

We provide a free, independent and confidential service, giving you someone that will listen to your concerns and help you get your voice heard.

What is Community Advocacy?

  • Advocacy is about your voice being heard.
  • An advocate supports people to speak out.
  • We can also speak up for someone who cannot speak up for themselves.

When can an Advocate help?

  • When you aren’t being listened to.
  • When you want to change things in your life.
  • When your rights haven’t been respected.
  • When you have a decision to make and want to find out all the options.
  • When you want to complain and need support to do this.

What will your Advocate Do?

  • Listen to you and treat you with respect.
  • Put what you want first.
  • Support you to tell people what you think.
  • Speak up for you if you ask us to – for example in meetings.
  • Help you to find out information, so you can make your own decision.
  • Will not tell anyone else anything you have said unless you want us to or if it involves the risk of harm to you or others.
