Professional Community Advocacy

Service user, looking happy

In Thurrock, we provide general advocacy to people with a disability, who are aged between 18 and 65. Last year, we supported 69 people on issues that included child protection, accommodation and safeguarding.

We support people to:

  • Speak up for themselves. If they do not feel confident to speak up themselves, we would work with them to clearly understand their wishes, so that we could represent them
  • Have choice and control over their lives and make decisions
  • Understand their rights and responsibilities
  • Access and understand good information to enable them make informed decision

Independent Mental Capacity Advocacy (IMCA)

We work with people who have been assessed as lacking capacity and who do not have family or friends who are appropriate to speak up for them. This work is always about decisions around serious medical treatment or changes in long term accommodation.

An IMCA can also support where there are concerns regarding Safeguarding or care reviews.

We provide the IMCA service in Partnership with Thurrock Mind and are now taking referrals from Basildon Hospital for Thurrock residents.

We also work in the area to raise awareness of the rights and responsibilities around capacity, providing training and presentations to care homes, social services etc.
