When would an IMHA be needed?

Patients wishing to access an IMHA service may like support and information around a number of issues to do with Mental Health detention.

IMHAs can provide support in the following areas:

  • A patient’s rights under the Mental Health Act
  • The parts of the Act which apply to them
  • Medical treatment they are receiving or might receive
  • Reasons for that treatment
  • The rights which other people have in relation to them under the Mental Health Act
  • Supporting patients to exercise their rights, which can include representing or speaking on their behalf
  • Supporting patients in the care planning process
  • Supporting Mental Health Review Tribunals
  • Negotiating appropriate aftercare, following hospital discharge
  • Accessing other support or services
  • Support to raise concerns about the care received
