Heather’s Story

Heather has been cared for by her elderly mother at home for her whole life. She is really close to her mother but her life has been rather secluded and she seldom went out. Heather didn’t think there were many opportunities for interesting things. She didn’t think that she could make choices, not to make everyday decisions, let alone decisions about special activities. Working with an advocate, it was difficult for Heather to make choices at first; even deciding where to sit or what to drink proved challenging for her.

Ruth was unhappy with the way her needs had been assessed by social services. She felt that the social worker had not treated the family very well.

Halil’s Story

Halil is a sociable gentleman with a great sense of humour and a love of music. He has profound and multiple learning disabilities and lives in a large nursing home. When we first met Halil, his only real activity was going to a day centre five days a week. He did not access the community or socialise outside his home and the centre. Halil spent most of his free time in his bedroom listening to the music channel on television. Halil does not have any active family members to support him either.

Alfred’s Choice

Alfred, a tailor by profession and hobby gardener, fell in love and set up home with George in 1963. They have remained living together in that same home in a northern city. Six months ago, at the age of 95, Alfred’s declining physical health led to increasing care being brought into his own home rapidly increasing to 24 hour support.
