Ian’s Story

Ian has a mild learning difficulty, physical difficulties, mental health issues and hearing problems. Ian finds it difficult to communicate with others, because he often misunderstands what people mean if they are not very clear. This can lead to extreme frustration, and Ian disengaging with professionals. Ian attends an activity group at a day centre, and had a disagreement with another person who attends. When Ian tried to explain his feelings to the day centre staff, he felt they did not understand him or take his views seriously.

Desmond’s Story

Desmond finds it difficult to communicate with others and is often misunderstood because of his obsessive behaviour. Desmond has a loving mother who often struggles to accept that medication may help to alleviate some of Desmond’s anxieties. During a review, an assessment was undertaken by a psychiatrist. Desmond had never been prescribed medication before but the psychiatrist recommended some to see if it could help Desmond to cope better and manage his behaviour. When Desmond’s personality started changing soon after he began his prescription, his mother felt he should stop taking it.
