Disability Commissioner for Scotland announced
Jeremy Balfour MSP has announced that his Member’s Bill to establish a Disability Commissioner for Scotland was introduced in the Scottish Parliament on Thursday 8 February 2024.
He called this:
“A milestone mark in the journey to have a dedicated champion of disability rights in our country.”
The Disability Commissioner will have a wide-ranging role, and this is likely to include:
- promoting awareness and understanding of the rights of disabled people
- reviewing law, policy and practice relating to the rights of disabled people
- involving disabled people and disabled people’s organisations in the work of the Commissioner
- advocating for disabled people nationally and promoting best practice by service providers
The Bill will now be allocated to one of the Scottish Parliament Committees to allow for a detailed examination of its contents and to hear from experts, organisations and members of the public. The committee will put out a call for views as part of this process.
