Who do I contact to make an NHS complaint?

Who to contact varies depending on which NHS service your complaint is about. 

If you are complaining about a hospital or a community NHS service

Contact one of the following:

  • the Chief Executive of the NHS Trust
  • the commissioner of the service
  • the manager of the service

Call NHS England on 0300 311 22 33 to find out how to contact these people.

If you are complaining about a primary care service or independent provider

This includes GPs, dentists, opticians, pharmacists and health centres. 

Contact one of the following, but not both:

  • the manager of the service
  • NHS England

If you are complaining about an ambulance service

Contact your local NHS Trust, who will usually have a separate complaints address for their ambulance service.

If you are complaining about Public Health services, such as Health Visitors

Contact your local authority.

If you know what you want to complain about, but don’t know who to contact

Most NHS organisations will have a website which includes information about making complaints.

If you are complaining about more than one organisation

If your complaint is about more than one NHS organisation, you only need to send a letter to one of them. They will contact all the other organisations involved and work together on a response.
