Maternity and neonatal independent advocacy support
Maternity and neonatal independent advocacy supports women, birthing people and families when they have experienced an adverse outcome during or after maternity and neonatal care.
The Bath and North East Somerset Integrated Care Board host a Maternity and Neonatal Independent Senior Advocate who is employed by the Integrated Care Board and does not work for the hospital or NHS Trust. This means that they can support you independently from hospital-based procedures by:
- Supporting you through the maternity and neonatal healthcare system to help you to understand what happened in your care
- Helping you to prepare for and attend meetings with you
- Supporting you through investigation and complaints processes
- Helping you and your family to be listened to and heard by your maternity and neonatal care providers
They might be able to support you if:
- Your baby died before they were born, after 24 weeks of pregnancy
- Your baby died in the first 28 days after they were born
- The baby’s mother or birthing parent died in the year following the birth
- You had an unexpected or unplanned hysterectomy (removal of your womb), within 6 weeks of birth
- You received care in a critical or intensive care unit and this wasn’t planned
- Your baby has a brain injury or it was thought they might have a brain injury
