We celebrate 2 years since we started supporting people to access benefits in Scotland

22 May 2024

We recently celebrated our 2 year anniversary of supporting people to access benefits in Scotland.

Since we started providing benefit advocacy in April 2022, we’ve dealt with around 6,000 cases and now have 51 staff in Scotland, with 16 more onboarding.

We’d like to make a special mention of the following advocates who’ve been with us from the start.

  • Alex Adair
  • Andy Craigie
  • Adrienne McCormack
  • Elizabeth Hewitson
  • Nicole Johnston

Many advocates travelled from across Scotland to be part of the celebration. Advocates who attended deliver:

  • Benefit advocacy under the ministerial Act of 2018, commissioned by Scottish Government
  • Advocacy to Edinburgh Adult unpaid carers, commissioned by Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership
  • Our newly awarded contract with North Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partners for Adults and Older People

Attendees at our 2 year anniversary celebration at The Salvation Army premises in Edinburgh

Emily Johnston, VoiceAbility’s operations manager for Scotland, said:

As we celebrate our 2 years in Scotland, it was good to meet up as a team to reflect on what we’ve achieved throughout the past 2 years.”

We have built great relationships with partnering organisations, this is purely down to our advocates, who day in day out deliver exactly what we say we will do. Supporting people to have their voices heard and their wishes respected.

Julia White, Public Affairs Lead (Scotland), added:

Participants heard about the work of our Engagement and Influencing Team and opportunities to promote the work of the Social Security Scotland Independent Advocacy Service. It was lovely to see so many people attending.”

We recently spoke to 3 of the 4000 people we’ve supported. They shared their stories with us…
