What is Oliver McGowan training?
Following the tragic passing of Oliver McGowan in 2016 whilst being treated in an NHS hospital, the Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism was created.
Oliver’s mother Paula McGowan OBE strongly believes that all health and social care staff require appropriate and meaningful training to help improve the understanding of people with learning disabilities and autistic people.
This programme has since become the government’s preferred training package and is now being delivered by people with learning disabilities and those who are autistic.
The training aims to save lives by ensuring the health and social care workforce have the right skills and knowledge to provide safe, compassionate and informed care to autistic people and people with a learning disability.

VoiceAbility is now officially authorised to deliver The Oliver McGowan Mandatory Training on Learning Disability and Autism.
How is the training structured?
Tier 1 is for people who require a general awareness of the support autistic people or people with a learning disability may need.
The training is 90 minutes e-learning with handbook NHSE elfh Hub (e-lfh.org.uk) and a one-hour online interactive session.
Tier 2 is for people who may need to provide care and support for autistic people and people with a learning disability.
The training is 90 minutes e-learning with handbook NHSE elfh Hub (e-lfh.org.uk) and a one-day face to face training.
The training must be co-delivered by at least one person with a learning disability and one autistic person.
The tier 1 online interactive session requires a facilitator and the live contribution of at least one person with a learning disability and one autistic person, as a minimum.
The tier 2 face-to-face training is delivered in 2 parts, 1 on learning disability and 1 on autism. Each part requires in-person delivery from both a facilitator and a trainer who has a learning disability or is autistic as a minimum.
In some cases, the facilitator may have a learning disability or be autistic, in which case they must be joined by another person with a learning disability or autistic person.
